A Convergence Of Deposition Science – ARL and Sea Grant

September 26, 2005

Over the last ten years, a series of ARL aircraft studies of atmospheric deposition has slowly generated the conclusion that deposition rates to complex terrain can be substantially underestimated by conventional methods. This work started with investigations during the Southern Oxidant Study, in Nashville TN, the success of which led to a number of similar studies in other locations.

Recently, mass balance studies of watersheds and studies of deposition downwind of roadways have led to a similar conclusion. These studies have been led by researchers of Cornell University, sponsored by Sea Grant.

Steps are now being taken to converge these two programs. Clearly, different methods are being used to address a common problem, and both parties are likely to profit from closer collaboration.
