Hurricane Deployment of the Extreme Turbulence Probe

At Oak Ridge, Tennessee, work is nearing completion on a version of the ARL Extreme Turbulence Probe designed to withstand hurricane winds. Plans are to deploy the prototype somewhere along the coast, in the path of a hurricane, and to measure winds and turbulence at velocities not previously reported. Two initial questions to be answered are (1) What windspeeds will the package withstand, and (2) How the measurements are affected by driving rain. The instrumentation is a development of the turbulence systems designed by the late Tim Crawford. The development and deployment of the probe are joint activities of the ARL Divisions at Idaho Falls and Oak Ridge.
