ARL’s Atmospheric Sciences and Modeling Division addresses climate misinformation

Recently with the unprecedented events of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, there has been a significant uptick in the number of inquiries coming into NOAA regarding various aspects of the storm, its relationship to climate, and a lot of misinformation about possible human-initiated geoengineering of the storms by NOAA and other agencies. Those claims about the geoengineering of storms are obviously incorrect, but ARL’s Atmospheric Sciences and Modeling Division has been involved in assisting the OAR Public Affairs Team in addressing these and in authoring fact checking responses in response to various media outlets who have approached NOAA. These have included international news organizations such as Reuters and the Polish Press Agency, as well as some domestic online services such as Fact Check and Logically Facts.
